Dinosaur Family Values: The Real Monsters in Jurassic Park :: essays papers

Dinosaur Family Values: The Real Monsters in Jurassic Park The striking good displayed in this story, is the lethal outcome of that assumption which endeavors to infiltrate, past endorsed profundities, into the riddles of nature. Playbill for the main stage creation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein(1826) In an ongoing PBS extraordinary about the chance of cloning dinosaurs a la Jurassic Park, Steven Speilberg uncovers that he felt his film form of Michael Crichton's tale had been a triumph on the grounds that There's such a reality to it.Later, one of the researchers met during the show concedes that restoring dinosaurs is so inventively convincing on the grounds that each scientist needs to see the genuine thing. In actuality, all through the PBS narrative the models used to assess every single imaginable plan for cloning dinosaurs is constantly encircled as an inquiry: How genuine would the subsequent dinosaurs be?The most deductively valid strategy talked about would include infusing dinosaur DNA into fledgling eggs with the expectation that few ages later the flying creatures would become dinosaur like.Yet all of the researchers talked with confirmations an away from of energy toward this technique in light of the fact that, as one of the scientistss puts it, obviously, it wouldn' t be a genuine dinosaur.Meaning, we can just finish up, that lone a dinosaur conceived of dinosaur guardians can be a genuine dinosaur. The program closes with two statements, one from the novel's creator, Michael Crichton, and the other from entertainer Jeff Goldblum, who plays researcher Ian Malcolm in the film.First Crichton illuminates us that Jurassic Park is, well beyond all else, a useful example about the perils of hereditary building; and furthermore, Goldblum parts of the bargains developing Crichton's admonition and exhorting us that we are in an ideal situation wondering about the past instead of altering what's to come. The PBS program flawlessly echoes and sums up the focal belief system of both the Jurassic Park films (Jurassic Park and The Lost World), which appears to me to be a fixation on the distinction among characteristic and unnatural rearing practices, and how common reproducing results in and from conventional child rearing, and unnatural reproducing results in and from non-customary and subsequently unsound or inpure or, to put it as basically as could be expected under the circumstances, unnatural child rearing. At the end of the day, I beieve both of these movies make essentially a similar contention: that there is a contrast among normal and unnatural guardians, and consequently common and unnatural families. The representation the movies use as a true to life substitute for this very preservationist take on child rearing is science, or rather characteristic versus unnatural science.

If you or someone you know has been referred to an assertive community treatment program, you may be wondering whether this is the best option and what it will entail. Rest assured that ACT is an evidence-based practice that has been studied for several decades, and has likely been offered to you for specific reasons. Definition of ACT The simple definition of assertive community treatment is an intensive, integrated approach to community mental health service delivery. What this means is that mental health services are provided in a community setting (rather than a more restrictive residential or hospital setting) to people experiencing serious mental illness. The mission of ACT is to help people become independent and integrate into the community as they experience recovery. Secondary goals include reducing homelessness and unnecessary hospital stays. In this way, ACT offers treatment in the real world and the team of professionals provides help using a whole team approach. Many people suffer from symptoms of mental illness that impact their ability to function in daily life and that land them in the hospital emergency department seeking services. The goal of ACT is to reduce this reliance on hospitals by providing round-the-clock services to the people who need it most. In this way, assertive community treatment could be expected to help to reduce preventable outcomes of mental illness, such as homelessness and substance abuse. History How did assertive community treatment get its start? Go back to the 1970s and a picture will quickly emerge of a shift away from institutionalization of patients with severe mental illness. At the same time, community services were poorly set up to help these people who were no longer living in institutional settings. The founders of ACT were Leonard I. Stein, Mary Ann Test, Arnold J. Marx, Deborah J. Allness, William H. Knoedler and other colleagues at Mendota Mental Health Insitute in Madison, Wisconsin (a state psychiatric hospital). As unusual as it sounds, at the time that assertive community treatment first came into being, it was considered a radical approach. Since that time, however, it has become one of the most important delivery methods for specific populations of those with mental illness. Whats more, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has been on board, publishing a manual for ACT in 1998 and operating a training and advocacy center from 1998 to 2004. Who Assertive Community Treatment Serves If you or a family member has been assigned ACT services, you might wonder why you were chosen to receive this type of service. Below is a list of the most common reasons a person will be offered assertive community treatment services: persons with severe symptoms of mental illnesspeople with significant thought disorders such as schizophreniayoung adults experiencing early-stage schizophreniapeople with stigmatized mental illnessespersons with high rates of substance abusepeople with a significant history of traumathose with frequent hospital stayspeople experiencing homelessness due to mental illnesspersons with overlapping physical and mental illnesses (for instance, hard-of-hearing individuals with a mental illness)persons experiencing psychiatric crisespeople with mental illness in the criminal justice systemrefugees with mental illnesspeople unlikely to attend appointments at hospitals or clinicspeople who have not responded well to traditional outpatient care ACT Locations Assertive community treatment has been implemented in countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom. For example, specifically in the United States, ACT was implemented across the country by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Services are not provided in a clinic, but rather in the patients home, in community locations (such as a coffee shop, restaurant, or public park), in homeless shelters, or wherever is most appropriate and convenient for the person using the service. Characteristics If you are about to enter assertive community treatment, you are probably unsure of what to expect. Most ACT programs have similar structures, so the following may give you some guidance on what the program will offer. Your treatment plan will be centered around your own personal strengths, needs, and desires for the futureACT is offered long-term but not unlimited; the goal is to eventually transition you to other services or for you to maintain what you have learned on your ownThe focus of ACT is on community integration and getting you back to living a normal lifeACT follows a holistic approach to treatment, meaning that all areas of your life are targets for improvementACT usually has a ratio of about 10:1, meaning that for every 10 clients there will be one team member assignedMost clients have multiple contacts with team members each weekACT is offered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ensure that you always have the help you needAn ACT team generally includes a psychiatrist, social workers, nurses, occupational therapists, peer support specialists, and moreACT is a considered a medically monitored non-residential service, which is two steps down from the highest level of service (medically ma naged residential service)Team members will develop long-term relationships with you regardless of whether you become homeless or find yourself incarceratedWhen you are doing better, you will be transitioned out of the ACT program Services Provided by ACT What are the specific services that you can expect to receive from the ACT team? The following is a list of some of the primary services that assertive community treatment offers: initial and ongoing assessmentspsychiatric services such as coping with psychotic episodes or crisessubstance abuse serviceshelp with employment and housingeducation for family members and you about your mental illnesstreatment planning and monitoringaccompanying you to medical appointments and dentist appointmentsrepresentation at court hearingshelp with finances (such as managing money and paying bills)helping you to grow confident with housekeeping, shopping, cooking, and transportationemployment support such as finding and keeping a jobhelp to order and manage medications The Benefits Overall, research evidence on assertive community treatment has been positive with some caveats. A 2016 evidence review showed that ACT reduced self-reported psychiatric symptoms, hospital stays, and emergency department visits among people with mental illness and substance abuse. In general, from the dozens of randomized controlled trials that have been conducted, it can be concluded that ACT is more effective than standard services in reducing hospital use, but findings for other outcomes are less clear. While studies have shown improvements in housing, symptom management, and quality of life for ACT, these findings were most evident for people who tended to return to hospitals often. It has been noted that ACT may be most helpful in communities that do not have well coordinated mental health care systems, which result in overuse of hospitals by those with serious mental illness. For example, ACT may show better outcomes in the United States than in the United Kingdom, because the former has a poorly coordinated system for mental health care that results in more hospital stays, while the latter has a well-coordinated system that already includes many aspects of ACT in its standard care. Other research has shown ACT to be more effective than standard care in reducing the risk of hospital stays and incarceration, specifically in poor inner-city neighborhoods, and reducing alcohol use or incarceration among those with antisocial personality disorder. Furthermore, among the homeless, it has been shown that ACT results in more satisfaction with care and more stable housing situations than standard care. This is easy to understand when you consider the ACT modelâ€"homeless individuals meet service providers where it is convenient for them are more likely to benefit from services than those who must travel to receive help. Finally, in a Cochrane review of 38 clinical trials from the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia, it was shown that ACT was more effective than standard care in lowering the time spent in hospitals and improving social functioning and independent living. At the same time, mental health and quality of life were not shown to improve more than when standard care was offered. Overall, the research evidence suggests that ACT is most helpful for people with serious mental illness as a method to keep them out of the hospital and in the community. Criticism of ACT Overall, there have been some criticisms of the ACT program. One is that ACT is simply a system of coercion in which hospitals deny admission to patients based on their enrollment in the ACT program. At the same time, isnt staying in the community the goal of all mental health initiatives? In this way, it seems that regardless of whether the tactics are coercive, if patients can be treated in the community where they live, tracked through prison and homeless shelters, and offered 24/7 care at their convenience, then the benefits may be worth the drawbacks. A Word From Verywell If you have been assigned to receive assertive community treatment services, you may feel nervous about what to expect or what sort of support you will receive. Know that your team will be available to answer questions and offer support to you long-term in the community at locations that serve you best. As a person living with serious mental illness, ACT is an effective long-term support that should serve you well. Mental Health and Addiction

Teenagers Are Irresponsible, Emotional, Narcissistic And...

A widespread opinion in the United States today is that teenagers are irresponsible, emotional, narcissistic and ungrateful. While it may not necessarily be the fault of the teenagers themselves, rather their parents instead, the opinion is still there. Along with this opinion is the assumption that you cannot trust teenagers with big, cumbersome responsibilities, they can’t handle it. While teenagers can be emotional and at times irresponsible, that doesn’t mean they cannot make a difference or have an effect on history. In some places in the world teenagers and even preteens are forced into marriages and responsibilities that teenagers of the western world just wouldn’t be able to handle. Therefore, teenagers, given the opportunity and just the right circumstances, can make a difference, they can be given large responsibilities and hold to them. It’s all about upbringing and the situation at hand. Raised in part by a wildly conservative stepmother in a time when women having an education in and of itself was taboo, Mary Shelley is a prime example of a young adult that overcame challenges to do something so extraordinary that it still has an effect nearly 200 years later. Her stepmother was so stringently conservative that she was forced to teach herself to read and write from her father s immense library. Comparison Between the Declaration of Independence and the...

Alisha Pegan Dec. 5, 2010 Compare and Contrast Essay between DOI and DSR During the late 1700’s, the colonies in America were upset and resentful of the British tyranny. In order to make the separation between the two groups official, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. Two hundred years later, women were facing the same injustice, only it was from men; and to protest against the unfair treatment, Elizabeth Cady Stanton wrote the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions. Both parties of oppression fought against the same outcome, unjust treatment, yet, each fought against different causes and in different ways. Jefferson and Stanton direct their piece to different audiences. Jefferson claims in his piece that,†¦show more content†¦He does not just declare independence, he also declares war. Stanton uses the template of the Declaration of Independence to carry out the same tone of seriousness. She informs the audience that the issue between men and women is as serious as the issue between the King and the Colonies. The same urgent and indignant tone is accentuated, actions also needs to be taken right away. However, unlike Jefferson, Stanton does not declare war. In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson writes, â€Å"†¦it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government†¦Ã¢â‚¬ While in the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, Stanton writes, â€Å"†¦it is the right of those who suffer from it to refuse allegiance to it, and to insist upon the institution of a new government†¦Ã¢â‚¬ Jefferson uses the word â€Å"abolish†, whereas, Stanton uses the word â€Å"insist†. It is clear that Stanton plans on taking milder actions, such as protests, negotiations, or pure refusal. In the end, both Jefferson and Stanton were victorious in their fights. Personal Ethnography Free Essays

What is ethnicity? Ethnicities are the common characteristics of a group of people. As a large multi-national country, China is composed of 56 ethnic groups. My family is Han Chinese. We will write a custom essay sample on Personal Ethnography or any similar topic only for you Order Now Han people are majority people group in the China, account for 91. 59 of the overall Chinese population according to the Fifth National Population census of 2000. I was born and grew up in China so I would account myself, identify as the full-blooded Chinese. I don not have the complicated ethnic background. However Asian Americans have been in American for over 150 years. My ancestors never leave their homeland motivated by seeking political asylum or dreams of a money in my family history. Therefore, my roots allow me to be classified as Chinese. Mandarin is my mother tongue, all my families speak it and read it. All education is conducted in Mandarin. It does not mean there no problem among the Mandarin speakers all around the China because there are over 600 regional dialects except Mandarin. Older generation used to speak regional dialects, like my parents often speak Fukienese with my grandparents. Generally, China’s main religion are Buddhism, this was the only foreign religion to be absorbed into and changed by Chinese culture, contributing in many ways to the country’s cultural development. Buddhism is also my family’s beliefs, we will worship Budda in some festivals. No matter the language or the religion also help to identify me as full-blooded Chinese. Other identifying me as a Chinese by my skin color, hair, eyes, other appearance features, and ask me where I come from. I’m a little bit shy at school, and when I have questions or I need help on my subjects, I hesitate to raise my hand. Since my freshman year I have been like this. I attend every class and turn in every homework or project on time, for this reason, they identified me as an Asian, because of the stereotypes placed on Asians my behavior and attitude contributed to people’s reasoning. China is the oldest civilization in the world and Chinese civilization was built on agriculture. The collective (group-oriented) nature of Chinese values is largely the product of thousands of years of living and working together on the land (Hu, Grove 1) Today, China is a communist government with a socialist ideology and a capitalist economy. Traditional festivals are celebrated in many countries all around the world. China with its long history and predominantly agricultural society has large number of traditional festivals. As Eberhard states â€Å"Few nations have such a multitude of romantic and colorful celebrations as do the Chinese† (Eberhard 31). Also, the family not the individual, is the basic unit in China, all festivals are family festivals rather than church or state festivals. The Chinese New Year was and still the most widely celebrated festival throughout the whole China. It is the time for family reunions, a time for visits with friends, a rest for the hard work and all sorts of entertainment. That is so true that The Chinese New year is a big event and it should be my favorite festival. The Chinese New year officially lasts one month, but in that very day everyone tries to be at home, families sit all together at a big table to share a delicious dinner. Kids wear new cloths and wait for pocket money from parents, then we have firecrackers to welcome the New year. Usually, the first day of the New Year is devoted to feasting and visiting relatives. On the second or third day friend visit and exchange good wishes. Food is one of the most significant resources in life. All cultures differentiate themselves through their development and attitude toward food. Therefore, there is a wide variation of food, which often has a lengthy developmental history, that symbolizes diverse cultural attitudes; specific foods, such as pasta for Italians, curry for Southeastern Asians, and pierogi for Poles, serve as a focus for ethnic identity (Hirschberg 57). As a Chinese, I respect all food, and do care about it. Maybe I could say it is the most distinguished cuisine in this world. Americans like pastas, pizza or meat as entrees, however rice is a basic and important food to us. People in western countries like to use butter, cheese as ingredients, but we use soy sauce and bean curd. We have so many different techniques for cooking food, such as boiling, deep-frying and pickling, but they are not always done in the totally same ways. Take an example of boiling, one is cooking in water makes it continues to boil, and the other one is put the stuff in boiled water and then reducing the temperature. However, although Chinese people share the same culture, some food items a re available in only particular regions. I lived in south China, there are many basins and plains, which help the various harvests of food because of the warm and moist growth environment; rice, green vegetables, and animals are produced. Do not like northern China, most likely are grown for wheat. As the globalization, Chinese and Americans are interacting with each other more. The western traveler must be aware of the different greeting styles that exist in China. The most common greeting among the Chinese is Nihao, which means greetings or good day. We do use direct greetings like â€Å"Good morning†, â€Å"Good afternoon†, or â€Å"Good night†. You may use Nihao either on virtually any occasion regardless of the time of day or the social status of the person you are greeting. And the most conventional way to greet a Chinese is simply to say his or her name, perhaps adding a term of respect. For examples, a girl just back from school may call out â€Å"Baba† (Daddy) when greeting her father. I think you should not greet Chinese with kiss, hug or other physical contact beyond handshaking, these nonverbal forms will not be appreciated. given name while in the United States the reverse is true. Prepare for this paper I searched for several materials and look up so many book about the Chinese culture. As a Chinese I still learn lots of new acknowledge that I never know before. For instant, like Chinese New year, I did not know the origin of this festival. I would like to share information with others but I don’t want to make a label with racism or others. Racism will never end unless the word race is not used any more. We must stop separating Chinese, American, and Mexican groups. Works Cited Hirschberg, Stuart, and Terry Hirschberg. Tobias Smollett Biography Essays - Picaresque Novels,

Tobias Smollett Biography Tobias George Smollett (1721-1771), Scottish novelist, was born in Dalquhurn, Dumbarton County Scotland. Smollett was born beneath a plane tree at Dalquharn House on the family estate of Bon hill in the Vale of Leven, near the village of Renton, Dumbartonshire. At fourteen Smollett was apprenticed to a Glasgow doctor. He studied medicine at Glasgow University and moved to London in 1740. He was a ship's surgeon in the Carragena expedition against the Spanish in the West Indies, and lived in Jamaica until 1744 when he returned to London and renewed his earlier attempts to stage a play he had written The Regicide, but still met with no success. He also failed to set up his own medical practice. His first novel, the partly autobiographical Roderick Random (1748), was an immediate success. His best novel, The Expedition of Humphry Clinker (1771), has become a classic. It is a story, told in a series of letters, about the travels of a family through England and Scotland. Smollett was troubled by lack of money. He spent his last years in poor health, and died in Livorno, Italy, on October 21, 1771. Two years later, Johnson and Boswell stayed at Cameron House with Smollett's cousin James, who was preparing to erect a Tuscan column in Smollett's memory at Renton. Johnson helped compose the Latin obituary on the plinth, and the column stood in what subsequently became the playground of a school. Some of Tobias Smollett's work consists of The Tears of Scotland (1746). Poem on the defeat of the Scots at the Battle of Culloden. The Adventures of Roderick Random ( 1748 ). Gil Blas. Translation of LeSage's novel. ( 1749 ). The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle ( 1751 ). The Adventures of Ferdinand, Count Fathom ( 1753 ). Don Quixote. Translation of Cervantes' novel. ( 1755). The Adventures of Sir Lancelot Greaves ( 1760 ). Travels through France and Italy ( 1766 ). The History and Adventures of an Atom ( 1769 ). The Expedition of Humphrey Clinker ( 1771 ). Some critics regard Tobias Smollet as more satirist meaning that a work of literature or art that, by inspiring laughter, contempt, or horror, seeks to correct the follies and abuses it uncovers. I don't know what that means though. This is a paragraph from Tobias Smollett's book The Adventures of Roderick Random. Roderick Random is the orphaned, unwanted grandson of a severe old Scots magistrate, exposed by his grandfather's known neglect to the malice of the community. His principal enemies are the schoolmaster and the young heir. It is not long before a deus ex machina appears in the form of a sailor uncle: He was a strongly built man, somewhat bandy-legged, with a neck like that of a bull, and a face which had withstood the most obstinate assaults of the weather. His dress consisted of a soldier's coat, altered for him by the ship's tailor, a striped flannel jacket, a pair of red breeches japanned with pitch, clean grey worsted stockings, large silver buckles that covered theree-fourths of his shoues, a silver laced hat whosecrown overlooked the brim about an inch and a half, a black bob wig in buckle, a check shirt, a silk hankerchief, a henger with a brass handle girded on his thigh by a tarnished laced belt, and a good oak plant under his arm.

The Fate of The Universe Revealed

The Fate of The Universe Revealed Free Online Research Papers Abstract By introducing virtual 4th dimension to represent time in similar manner like 3 dimensions of space which can be measure in terms of length, the attempt is made to explain how velocity of the object in â€Å"Special Theory of Relativity† causes time dilation and how matter affects time in case of â€Å"General Theory of Relativity†. Same concept has been used to solve the â€Å"Galaxy Rotation Curve† problem and pioneer anomaly without need of any dark matter. Finally, it is shown that, increase in time affects gravity giving new definition to gravity based on which explosion of black hole and evolution of Universe is predicted. Keywords: Galaxy Rotation Curve, Dark Matter, Special and General Theory of Relativity. Introduction Our Universe is made of 3 dimensional space and one dimensional time (atleast these are the dimensions which are directly affecting to us in our day to day life and are not hidden like those remaining 7 dimensions in case of string theory). As per special and general theory of relativity, these 3 dimensional space and time are not two separate things, but are closely connected to each other. Hence, instead of measuring time in terms of unit of second, by introducing virtual 4th dimension, we can represent time in terms of measuring unit meter such that one second equal to 3*108 meter. Time Dilation in Special Theory of Relativity In following figure, the 3 dimensional space is considered as 2 dimensional sheet moving in remaining vertical virtual dimension at the speed of light, (c= 3 * 108 m) for mass less (energy) particles like photons. In real Universe, the vertical dimension shown in figure is not as like dimensions of the space having length, but it is an imaginary dimension. Here, for simplicity, it is assumed that the vertical dimension representing time is similar to dimensions of space having length as measuring quantity so that 1 second in vertical dimension is equivalent to 3* 108 m. In other words, 3 Dimensional Space is moving in 4th Dimension at the speed equal to speed of light for mass less particles like photon. Figure – 1.0 The above concept very well explains why particles like photons can travel at speed of light? It is a mass less particle which do not affect space-time geometry. Also, from figure it is seen that, for photon which is travelling at the speed of the light, its time from the frame of reference of the stationary object should be equal to zero i.e vertical distance measured in above figure should be zero. In other words, photon or energy particles should entirely live only in 3 Dimensional space. For the object having velocity less than the speed of light, the vertical distance or time can be calculated as shown in following figure. Figure – 2.0 In above figure, when the object is at stationary (V=0), the vertical dimension will always measure the distance equal to 3 * 108 m in 1 second. But, if the same object travels at velocity ‘V’, then, in one second, the vertical distance will measure [c*Sqrt{1-(V2/c2)}] m, because, the path of the object no longer remain perpendicular to our 2 Dimensional sheet but remains in inclined direction as shown in figure -2. Therefore, time of the moving object will always remain less than time in reference frame of stationary object or time is slowed down with increase in velocity ‘V of the object which is nothing but â€Å"Time Dilation† phenomenon in â€Å"Special Theory of Relativity†. Also, for moving object, time get slow down and not for the stationary object, hence, twin paradox will never happen. It is something like every object (moving as well as stationary) always remains attached with fixed or absolute frame of reference in their frame of referen ce. It means, the moving as well as stationary object in their respective frame of reference will always measure one second equal to 3* 108m in above figure. For stationary object, time and space never mixed with each other or remains as separate entities, while for moving object, its velocity V in space affects its time or vertical distance measured in virtual dimension. Time Dilation in General Theory of Relativity As per General Theory of Relativity, matter bends space-time making curvature of space-time around it giving effect of gravity and this curvature depends upon quantity of matter. More matter, more will be curvature of space-time. This concept usually demonstrated by scientists as the heavy object kept in middle of 2 dimensional rubber sheet representing fabric of 3 dimensional space which bends the rubber sheet due to its weight. When another light object is moved from edge of rubber sheet towards the heavy object, it got trapped in curvature (gravity effect) made by heavy object and follow inward spiral trajectory around this heavy object such that its velocity increases with decrease in distance from the heavy object. Finally, it collapsed into heavy object. Thus, in this demonstration, curvature of rubber sheet due to presence of heavy object very well explains gravity effect according to General Theory of Relativity. But, there is one hidden thing in above demonstration that is, in order to produce curvature effect on rubber sheet due to weight of heavy object, it requires additional force in remaining 3rd dimension (perpendicular to 2 dimensional rubber sheet) which is nothing but gravitational force produced by the Earth. For example, if same demonstration is done on the moon, the curvature produced by heavy object will become less than that on the Earth because gravitational strength of the Earth is six times greater than the moon. Now, Einstein is on right track with respect to his General Theory of Relativity which has been already confirmed through number of experiments like bending of light, mercury perihelion, gravitational lensing etc. It suggests that in order to produce effect of curvature of space-time, matter must have to produce force in the vertical virtual dimension so that this force causes the matter to move in opposite direction of flow of time. In other words, the object due to presence of its matter always moves in opposite direction wi th respect to direction of flow of time. It can be explained in the following figure: Figure – 3.0 From above, it is clear that presence of matter bends space-time slowing down time such that time near surface of the object is always less than away from it. But as already told, the vertical dimension is a virtual dimension representing time for our sake of simplicity, in real universe, instead of bending of space in time or virtual vertical dimension, it remains as flat 2 dimensional sheet such that its density become higher near the surface of the object which decreases as moving away from the object. Or space-time is not empty but filled with medium having its own density representing flat space-time which can be called as vacuum density. Thus, presence of matter causes increase in vacuum density near the object which decreases while going away from the object and finally become constant to represent flat space-time. But, if gravitational constant, G is really a constant, then curvature of space-time in above figure should not changed with increase in time difference, ?T because of increase in time itself. This can be achieved by keeping restriction on gravitational strength (acceleration) due to Gravitational Constant, G up to specified region such that beyond this region effect of G on gravitational strength become very negligible and it entirely depends upon increase in time i.e. changes in curvature of space-time is more beyond this region. The equation for gravitational strength can be written as: g = (G*M/r2)*{1+ (3P/?c2)} f(T) = a f(T) (1) -Ve sign indicates that spreading of curvature of space-time radially out. In other words, the force due to f(T) acts like repulsive force or opposite to attractive gravitational force. Where, g = Gravitational strength or acceleration, G = Gravitational constant = 6.67*10-11 m3/(Kg*Sec2); M = Mass of the object creating gravitational field, r= distance from the center of the object, and f(T) = Function of Time which acts opposite to gravitational strength. From above eq., for f(T) very less than a, G dominates the gravitational strength and as a becomes very less than f(T) because of inverse square relationship with r, g must be expressed in terms of f(T). Note that value of G always remains constant and changes in curvature of space-time is governed by f(T) beyond the region from where effect of G becomes negligible while effect of increase in time dominates beyond this region. The above analysis can be well illustrated in following figure; Figure – 4.0 From above figure, the region for which value of af(T) the change in the value of g is very small while for a

7 Great Websites for Writers

7 Great Websites for Writers 7 Great Websites for Writers 7 Great Websites for Writers By Mark Nichol From usual suspects to obscure gems, from grammar guides to usage resources, here are some websites of great value to writers: 1. Amazon.com You may have heard of this website a good place, I understand, to find books (or anything else manufactured). But what I appreciate even more is the â€Å"Search inside this book† link under the image of the book cover on most pages in the Books section. No longer does one need to own a book or go to a bookstore or a library to thumb through it in search of that name or bon mot or expression you can’t quite remember. And even if you do have access to the book in question, it’s easier to search online (assuming you have a keyword in mind that’s proximal in location or locution to your evasive prey) than to try to remember on what part of what page in what part of the book you remember seeing something last week or last month or years ago. And then, of course, there are the site’s â€Å"Frequently Bought Together† and â€Å"Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought† features but the book search can be a writer’s salvation. 2. Banned for Life Newspaper editor Tom Mangan’s site lists reader contributions of clichà ©s and redundancies. 3. The Chicago Manual of Style Online My review on this site of The Chicago Manual of Style notes that buying the bulky book, despite its abundance of useful information, is overkill for writers (but not editors), but editorial professionals of all kinds will benefit from the CMOS website’s Style QA feature, which responds authoritatively, sensibly, and often humorously to visitors’ queries. 4. GrammarBook.com The late Jane Straus, author of The Blue Book on Grammar and Punctuation, created this site to promote her book, but it also features many simple grammar lessons (with quizzes), as well as video lessons, an e-newsletter, and blog entries that discuss various grammar topics. 5. The Phrase Finder A useful key to proverbs, phrases from the Bible and Shakespeare, nautical expressions, and American idiom (the site originates in the United Kingdom), plus a feature called â€Å"Famous Last Words† and, for about $50 a year, subscription to a phrase thesaurus. (Subscribers include many well-known media companies and other businesses as well as universities.) 6. The Vocabula Review The Principal Web Destination for Anyone Interested in Words and Language Essays about language and usage; $25 per year by email, $35 for the print version. 7. The Word Detective Words and Language in a Humorous Vein on the Web Since 1995 This online version of Evan Morris’s newspaper column of the same name (some were also published in the book The Word Detective) features humorous QA entries about word origins. Evolution vs. Intelligent Design Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Evolution vs. Intelligent Design - Essay Example The teaching of creation in public schools simply fulfills the purpose of protecting specific underling religious beliefs. If creation is to be taught, it is solely the responsibility of parents and the church because teaching the religious theories of creation in schools not only violates constitutional precepts. This issue invokes intense passions from those driven by their religious faith and those who would stand up for the Constitution and those that gave the lives of their loved ones to protect it. The First Amendment begins with â€Å"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (â€Å"The Constitution†) The idea of creation is undeniably religious doctrine. The government, therefore, cannot promote it in classrooms as science without infringing on the First Amendment. The Supreme Court has held that instructors may not teach that humans were created by God and must present only scientific ex planations for the history of life. Creationism can not be presented as scientific fact. In addition, it is also unconstitutional to compel teachers to teach creationism and schools may not refuse to teach evolution in an effort to avoid offending religious individuals. The idea of disclaimers placed in school books such as ‘the teaching of evolution is not intended to influence or dissuade the Biblical version of Creation or any other concept’ has been lawfully established to be unconstitutional. An instructor also has the constructional right to teach evolution (â€Å"Epperson v. Arkansas†, 1968). Religious theories of creation may be incorporated into school curriculums as a comparative example of what some religious groups accept as fact.

Fast Food Culture In China Cultural Studies Essay

Fast Food Culture In China Cultural Studies Essay Fast food is the term given to food that can be prepared and served very quickly. Nowadays Fast food has been well-known of the whole world, and it has brought huge influences to the whole world, including China. Fast food, like McDonalds and KFC, has come into China for more than 30 years. It forms its own culture step by step and takes great effects to China. Fast food has been a very important part to peoples life. This paper will analyze the formation and development of Fast-food and the influences of Fast food culture, and then summarize the enlightenment of Fast food culture, like cultural localization and right view of Fast food culture. Key words: Fast food culture, effect, enlightenment 1. Introduction According to Wikipedia, Fast food is the term given to food that can be prepared and served very quickly. While any meal with low preparation time can be considered to be fast food, typically the term refers to food sold in a restaurant or store with preheated or precooked ingredients, and served to the customer in a packaged form for take-out/take-away.The term fast food was recognized in a dictionary by Merriam-Webster in 1951. Fast food, which came out from McDonalds in the USA in 1950s, has brought huge influences to the whole world, including China. For a long time it forms its own culture step by step and takes great effects to China. What does Fast-food culture mean? According to The Analysis of Fast Food Culture Status in China, it means quick, popular, short-term pop. This paper will analyze the formation and development of Fast-food and the influences of Fast food culture. 2. The Formation and Development of Fast food The beginning of learning a culture is learning its history. And the history of culture mainly includes its formation and development. How about the history of Fast food? 2.1. Fast food in the USA According to Baidu, Fast food is originated from the USA. Fast food came out from McDonalds in the USA in 1950th at the beginning. At that time it just was small restaurant with a table, several chairs and a tattered sign in a small square without cover. All the things exist by selecting the superior and eliminating the inferior. In the cruel competition, McDonalds was survived and succeed. Foreigner like its convenient, then KFC, which founded in 1951 by Colonel Harland Sanders, and Pizza-hut, which founded in 1958 by Frank and Dan Camey, followed its steps and they formed the original area of Fast food. And it grew very fast and had strong power. The reason why Fast food developed so fast is that the result of the development of the society. Nowadays the pace of life becomes faster and faster, and having meals seems to become a trouble, a behavior of wasting times. Because of the reason people begins to cut down the times for meals. And Fast food, a kind of delicious and convenient food, becomes very popular and the social mainstream. 2.2. Fast food in China Fast food came into China in the early of 1980s. And it received great success in a short time. At the beginning Fast food was popular in teenager, until now all the people like to eat Fast food, such as the young and the old. But there are some differences that people often wait for a line to buy Fast food. And it seldom happens in the USA. Some people think that Fast food is not fast. People realize that Fast food cannot save the time, instead, spend much more time. However, most people still like eating Fast food. Chinese people always love eating, and people think that Fast food means fashion. Further, people find Fast food is very delicious. For a while some mediums claim that Fast food is not unhealthy food and it can caused lots of health issues. The news gave a big beat to Fast food, like McDonalds and KFC. But a silent period later, Fast food was active again with a new face-new advertisements and new values. Now people often go to McDonalds and KFC with whole family or closed friends to share the happiness and sorrow. In fact, Fast food, some food is pocketed for taking away, has existed for a long time in China but people cannot realized it. In peoples mind, Fast food means McDonalds or KFC, actually the traditional snack bars beside the McDonalds or KFC also belong to Fast food. With the popular of the McDonalds or KFC, Chinese Fast food, like the traditional snack bar, also has fast development, but limited by some resistance force. 3. The influences of Fast food culture Fast food culture has brought huge influences to the whole world, including China. And some effects are positive and some effects are negative. The comparison of positive effects and negative effects of Fast food culture as follow: 3.1. Positive effects of Fast food culture Fast food culture takes many benefits to the whole world. It promotes the rapid development of society. And it takes positive effects to many areas, especially education. 3.1.1. Easy and fast education How to judge a culture is good or bad? There are two rules: one is whether the culture beyond the mainstream of the period, the other is whether the culture can be accepted by most of the people. (à ¦Ã‚ ¢Ã‚ Ãƒ ¥Ã‚ »Ã‚ ºÃƒ ¥Ã‚ Ã… ½, 2008) Fast-food culture is not only the happiness and enjoyment, but also is the most direct and the simplest way of education for the teenagers. And the culture takes some active effects to the view of the teenagers value. Fast food culture makes the teenagers value turn into the diversification. With the popular of Fast-food culture, the view of democracy and wild open is instead of the old view of values. And the diversification of the value it is a great progress to people. That is good for the growth of the teenagers. All scores of the value exist and develop together at the same time, it makes the peoples life become more wonderful and people pay more attention to their life. In the case, the teenagers can learn more than before. Fast food culture uses the simplest way to transfer the knowledge of the culture. It has not the strong power of the classical culture, and it also is not like a star, light forever. However, Fast food culture can use one way that all the people can accept to expound the rich and depth of the social culture. And that can cut down the level of education and make all the different people can have one quick way to learn the culture. The teenagers can be lack of the plenty of the knowledge and culture and it can provide has resulted in the popularity of corporate intranets. (à ¦Ã‚ ¢Ã‚ Ãƒ ¥Ã‚ »Ã‚ ºÃƒ ¥Ã‚ Ã… ½, 2008) 3.1.2. An innovation in other areas According to The Inheritance of Chinese National Music From Fast Food Culture, Fast food in the early 80s in the 20th century, introduced into China at the beginning of the 21st century, with the fast food family words of the continually growing, fast food is not only affecting the restaurant industry, cultural industry, and spread to the political, educational, family life and other industries. Chinese folk music has also been affected by fast food culture, resulting in fast food music. Chinese folk music and fast food times in Modern Music has a different target, the contents of different forms. Chinas Hong Kong and Taiwan music, Western music, Chinese traditional music is not incompatible, the key is that they contain the essential elements they convey, the performance of the thoughts or feelings, to what the audience can influence and nurture. It just gives people the subtle influence of good; it had the value of existence. The development of folk music history cannot be cut off. Any Age of music is inseparable from the inheritance of traditional music; any nation cannot abandon the nation and re-start. At the same time, we also recognize that any kind of good traditional music, only with the progress of the times, constantly discarded, modified and updated to maintain its vitality in order to reflect the vivid contemporary life, and give the inexhaustible drive to real life. Although the emergence of fast-food culture to some extent affected our nations cultural inheritance and development, but it also gives our countrys workers work in the heritage of folk music sounded the alarm. Concerned that the fast food culture is a derivative of the times, its emergence and development of their existence is inevitable. People should keep the development point of view to see this problem, select the essence and discard the dross, in order to come down Chinese folk music better. 3.2. Negative effects of Fast food culture While Fast food culture takes positive effects, it also takes some negative effects which cannot be ignored. Unhealthy food is a big problem of Fast food, because of this, some dirt-cheap culture has come out. 3.2.1. Unhealthy food Fast food brings conveniences to peoples life, at the same time, it brings some health issues. According to Wikipedia, According to the Massachusetts Medical Society Committee on Nutrition, fast food is especially high in fat content, and studies have found associations between fast food intake and increased body mass index (BMI) and weight gain. A 2006 study fed monkeys a diet consisting of a similar level of Trans fats as what a person who ate fast food regularly would consume. Both diets contained the same overall number of calories. It was found that the monkeys who consumed higher level of Trans fat developed more abdominal fat than those fed a diet rich in unsaturated fats. They also developed signs of insulin resistance, which is an early indicator of diabetes. After six years on the diet, the trans fat fed monkeys had gained 7.2% of their body weight, compared to just 1.8% in the unsaturated fat group. The director of the obesity program for the ChildrenHYPERLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childrens_Hospital_BostonHYPERLINK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childrens_Hospital_Bostons Hospital Boston, David Ludwig, claims that fast food consumption has been shown to increase calorie intake, promote weight gain, and elevate risk for diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ranked obesity as the number one health threat for Americans in 2003. It is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States and results in 400,000 deaths each year. About 60  million American adults are classified as being obese with another 127  million being overweight. Health issues associated with obesity causes economic despair regarding health care. According to a 2003 study conducted by RTI International in North Carolina, the cost of health care in America is said to increase by $93  billion a year, mainly from Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, both associated with obe sity. Excessive calories are another issue with fast food. According to B. Lin and E. Frazao, from the Department of Agriculture, states the percentage of calories which attribute to fast-food consumption has increased from 3% to 12% of the total calories consumed in the United States. A regular meal at McDonalds consists of a Big Mac, large fries, and a large Coca-Cola drink amounting to 1430 calories. A diet of approximately 2000 calories is considered a healthy amount of calories for an entire day (which is different depending on several factors such as age, weight, height, physical activity and gender). Besides the dangers of Trans fats, high calories, and low fiber, there is another health risk, food poisoning. In his book Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal, Eric Schlosser describes in gross detail the process of meatpacking. Meatpacking has become one of the most hazardous jobs in America, with the risk of injury being 3 times higher than any other factory work. The meatpacking factories concentrate livestock into large feedlots and herd them through processing assembly lines operated by poorly trained employees increase the risk of large-scale food poisoning. Manure gets mixed with meat, contaminating it with salmonella and Escherichia coli 0157:H7. E. coli 0157:H7 is one of the worst forms of food poisoning. Usually spread through undercooked hamburgers, its difficult to treat. Although antibiotics kill the bacteria, they release a toxin that produces hurtful complications. About 4% of people infected with E. coli 0157:H7 develop hemolytic uremic syndrome, and about 5% of children who develop the syndrome die. E. coli 0157:H7 has become the leading cause of renal failure among American kids. In a research experiment done by Pediatrics, 6,212 children and adolescents ages 4 to 19  years old were examined to find out some information about fast food. After interviewing the participants in the experiment, it was discovered that on a given day 30.3% of the total sample have reported to have eaten fast food. Fast-food consumption was prevalent in males and females, all racial/ethnic groups, and all regions of the country. Children who ate fast food, compared with those who did not, consumed more total fat, carbohydrates, and sugar-sweetened beverages. Children who ate fast food also ate less fiber, milk, fruits, and non-starchy vegetables. After reviewing these test results, the researchers concluded that consumption of fast food by children seems to have a negative effect on an individuals diet, in ways that could significantly increase the risk for obesity. 3.2.2. Dirt-cheap culture According to most peoples views, fast food culture is equivalent to junk culture and cultural content of thin, lack of nutrition. The reason why people criticize cultural fast food, is mainly on account of its negative impact. Because of cultural fast food categories in all cultures, it has the strongest commercialization, and best-selling, so it is most popular to company. Some people, for earning big money, only one-sided pursuit of entertainment and sensory stimulation, to satisfy the desire, ultimately it fall into the trap of bad culture. American philosopher Daniel à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ Bell said: The cultural transformation of modern society primarily due to the rise of mass consumption. the consumer of Fast food culture decided it must be market-oriented, catering to popular consumer tastes. They seem overwhelming, in fact, filled with graphic sexual content, non-historic, no depth, which has self destruction, fast speed but rotten. Fast food culture makes young people appear confu sed in values, the gradual degradation of aesthetic taste and cultural appreciation to the low-level decline. Seeking speed abandon quality is easy to lead hedonistic, decadent value orientation With the faster of life, peoples behavior seek for speed, emphasis on time, peoples thinking emphasizes simplicity. People do everything quickly; life seems to lack a stable deep meaning. To abandon the old for the new becomes the favorite of the people. People are long for the easy to effortlessly rich and comfortable life, longing for granted pleasure. People are more willing to be on the couch motion picture and music to bring a more relaxed sensory stimulation; to spread the literature, romantic novels, martial arts fiction to look for spiritual fast food; in all places of entertainment to while away leisure time. Those who own the publishing for profit business, aiming at the markets hot spots, to take quick tactics that make money strive to create the entertainment, leisure, Bo people smile to the fast food style books. Fast food culture is not only filled in the adult, but also among young people set off a wave after a wave of heat. Vulgarizations of cultural products affect y oung peoples value of objective knowledge and judgments, so that some young people have a spiritual hedonism and decadent material values. On studying, many students wallow in the network and internet games in peacetime, no time to study. When text coming, they often study in a hurry or even cheat in test. They always have no ambition on mind except enjoyment. In Fast food culture environment, quick success is easy to form in the values of young people. In Fast food culture quick successes often become the trend. Fast food culture is not just the people or culture entertainment consumption, but rather reflects a kind of fashionable life and values. Its commercial, market characteristics and the pursuit of material desires embodied and sensory enjoyment cultural environment, it is easy to values and behavior of people brought money worship and the utilitarian characteristics. (à ¦Ã‚ ¢Ã‚ Ãƒ ¥Ã‚ »Ã‚ ºÃƒ ¥Ã‚ Ã… ½, 2008) 4. The enlightenment of Fast food culture According to the formation and development of Fast food culture in China and the influences of Fast food culture, people can get some enlightenment. Cultural localization is the biggest enlightenment. And people should keep a right view of Fast food culture. 4.1. Cultural localization In the era of globalization, it has been recognized as an effective marketing strategy to consider the local culture and values. McDonalds and KFC, as multinational companies are successfully into Chinese market which has different culture and values and has achieved great success. The best way is to take all the cultural strategy of localization of advertisement and measure. (à ©Ã¢â€ž ¢Ã‹â€ Ãƒ ¥Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ©, 2007) Chinese place eating in an important position, eating has become indispensable in Chinese culture is an important part. Although the food culture in the West not developed enough, but still reflects the typical characteristics of their culture. Therefore, we can contrast between Chinese and Western food culture. Practices in the food, the Chinese traditional food practices are the main vegetable. Staple food is grain, vegetables complementary feeding, plus a small amount of meat, while most of the ancient Chinese believed in Buddhism, and eating vegetarian. Westerners, adhering to a nomadic, seafaring people of the cultural origin, to fishing and hunting, breeding mainly to the collection, cultivation, supplemented, Meat more. These cultural differences food, McDonalds, KFC to change the structure of a single food, Chinese food taste better than the weaknesses, continue to introduce all kinds of sense out of new varieties of the Chinese population. In Kentucky, Crispy Strips is add ed in fresh chicken wings, star anise, cinnamon, sesame oil and other traditional Chinese seasoning, won the praise of consumers; Chinese style, French fries can be described as East meets West; popcorn chicken as the consumers, a new leisure choice; in addition to cola beverages, soft drinks, also according to the Chinese people balanced diet of eating habits has launched the Hibiscus fresh vegetable soup, mustard pork soup. Even more stunning is that KFC restaurants in Guangdong, they even sell to local customers herbal tea. McDonalds launched KFC in China has not so much food, or made their own attempts, in 2004 McDonalds first taste of Chinese products, rice burgers launched in Taiwan, is a fried chicken or beef with cabbage and made of lettuce, two slices slightly after baking and flavoring of rice cake between. It is an important that the localization of foreign products is undoubtedly the fast-food restaurants under the Chinese culture and adjusts its marketing strategy. (à ¦Ã‚ Ã… ½Ãƒ ¦Ã¢â€ž ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å"à ¤Ã‚ ºÃ¢â‚¬Ëœ, 2005) Advertising campaign highlight the traditional of Chinese family values. First, according to some advertisement, Western fast food is mostly to attract publicity at the time the largest consumer groups of children. The sound of joyful music, Ronald McDonald and Colonel Grandfathers smiling face became their selling point. But with the growing size of enterprise, consumer groups diversification, foreign fast food advertising has become increasingly prominent in Chinese traditional concept of family values, because the value of the Chinese people in the You group orientation, attention to blood relatives of the family relations and family concept. In McDonalds 12 advertising, there are five whose background is either one or both parents and children in the family, outdoor play and dining scene. Accompanied by lively music, humorous plot, those create a relaxed, warm and happy family life situation. KFCs web site in 30 video ads have nine to happy family life is as attractive sight. On the other hand, in the reform and opening up of the situation, now China began to challenge old ideas, more and more groups of young people requested direction from the absolute freed. They made a bold innovation, the concept of a sense of competition, focus and improve self-awareness, participation and also look forward to greater cultural experience across the nation. I like (Im lovint) is McDonalds latest advertising terms. I like advertising the promotion in McDonalds history is an important milestone in McDonalds for the first time at the same time, more than 120 countries around the world together with the same set of ads, with a message for brand promotion. These ads will experience the culture and consumer products linked given more significance than the product itself. Public relations also need localization. Public relations is a function, its goal is to be effective with a variety of public relations to manage the organizations image and credibility. Good public relations will help shape the relatively stable, credible, approachable brand image. Fast-food culture, fast and violent, penetrates every corner of daily life, full of cultural and even infiltrate to the academic community. Fast food culture in the field needs a major cultural product, but it is not the proven classics in the cultural market, but it can adapt to the changing requirements of the market, which is necessary for people to enjoy real-time culture thing. Drink Raw Milk

Drink Raw Milk Having spent the majority of my life on a dairy farm, I have had the privilege of enjoying fresh, clean, delicious raw milk. There is nothing like it! I would be willing to wager that very few have ever experienced the enjoyment of sipping a tall, ice-cold, creamy â€Å"straight from the farm† glass of milk. There is nothing in the world that compares with the overall taste, the nutritional content, and the health benefits found in raw milk. Raw milk should be an option for everyone to consume. There are warnings and new research advising consumers to avoid raw milk and raw milk products. Indeed, I was surprised to read Nelson (2010) that, â€Å"Raw milk stands alone as the only food that has ever been outlawed, and its advocates point out that it took a constitutional amendment to ban alcohol,† (p. 3). Nonetheless, the movement seems to be gaining in popularity. The Oake Knoll Ayrshire farm in Foxborough, Massachusetts owned by the Lawton family is a perfect example of the momentum that the raw milk movement has gained. â€Å"Lawton figures that she has 200 weekly customers, versus just a handful two years ago,† (Gumpert, 2008). With the â€Å"organic† fresh products movement and the increased accessibility to farmer’s markets, consumers have become more aware of these alternatives. According to the president of the Weston A. Price Foundation, a foundation that stands strongly behind the raw milk movement, an estimated half a million Americans or more are consuming raw milk. There are many issues surrounding the raw milk versus pasteurized milk debate, but at this time I want to focus on the issue of choice. The taste of raw milk is the first thing I think of every time I drink pasteurized milk. There are drastic differences in taste, sweetness, and texture. Raw milk is mild, creamy, and even sweeter than pasteurized milk. â€Å"Fresh milk has a delicate flavour contributed by compounds of low molecular weight in trace amounts. Heat treatment affects the flavour of milk and produces detectable off-flavours,† (Aboshama, 1977). Many raw milk consumers testify that one of the main reasons they drink raw milk is for the flavor and creamy texture. In a New York Times article, several raw milk drinkers’ sentiments are voiced about the taste of raw milk: â€Å"richness and density,† â€Å"complexity of flavor,† and â€Å"we trust the traditional food chain [flavor] more,† (Drape, 2007). The best tasting milk is going to come from cows that are pasture-fed. There is a direct relationship between what the animal eats and the taste and nutritional value of the milk. â€Å"Products from pasture-raised animals are healthier [tastier] for you to eat than those from grain-fed animals for many reasons. Animals get more readily available nutrients from fresh pasture plants than from grains, so their products contain more vitamin E, beta carotene, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and omega-3 fatty acids,† (Schivera, 2003). This pasture-fed cow’s milk is the high quality raw milk that so many people are seeking out and defending. This high standard of milk resembles that of which most Americans once lived on, when either everyone owned a cow or knew someone who did. Research done by Levieux (1980) explains that two types of protein exist in milk; they are casein and whey. Unlike casein, whey protein is deconstructed during pasteurization (p. 93). These proteins play an important role in the absorption of vitamins and minerals. Colman, Hettiararchychy, and Herbert (1981) reported that many vitamins and minerals are attracted to these proteins and potentially bind to them. This bond can facilitate their absorption by the digestive system. Pasteurization destroys the ability of certain proteins in milk to bind the important vitamin folate and hence help its absorption (p. 1426). The components of raw milk that are thought to be most affected by the pasteurization process are the water soluble vitamins and the proteins. According to research completed by Rolls (1973), there is approximately a 10% loss of vitamins BI, B6, B12 and folate and a 25% loss of vitamin C (p. 10). Ultimately, raw milk provides the consumer with more available vitamins and minerals than pasteurized milk. The following chart compares the nutritional values of raw milk and pasteurized milk and clearly shows raw milk offers far more benefits than pasteurized milk. NUTRITIVE VALUE OF RAW MILK Vs. PASTEURIZED MILK (Chart) Category ComparedRaw MilkPasteurized Milk 1) Enzymes:All available. Less than 10% remaining. 2) Protein:100% available, all 22 amino acids, including 8 that are essential. Protein-lysine and tyrosine are altered by heat with serious loss of metabolic availability. This results in making the whole protein complex less available for tissue repair and rebuilding. ) Fats: (research studies indicate that fats are necessary to metabolize protein and calcium. All natural protein-bearing foods contain fats. )All 18 fatty acids metabolically available, both saturated and unsaturated fats. Altered by heat, especially the 10 essential unsaturated fats. 4) Vitamins:All 100% available. Among the fat-soluble vitamins, some are classed as unstable and therefore a loss is caused by heat ing above blood temperature. This loss of Vitamin A, D, E and F can run as high as 66%. Vitamin C loss usually exceeds 50%. Losses on water-soluble vitamins are affected by heat and can run from 38% to 80%. ) Carbohydrates:Easily utilized in metabolism. Still associated naturally with elements. Tests indicate that heat has made some changes making elements less available metabolically. 6) Minerals:All 100% metabolically available. Major mineral components are calcium, chlorine, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and sulphur. Vital trace minerals, all 24 or more, 100% available. Calcium is altered by heat and loss in metabolism may run 50% or more, depending on pasteurization temperature. Losses in other essential minerals, because one mineral usually acts synergistically with another element. There is a loss of enzymes that serve as leaders in assimilation minerals. NOTE:Bacterial growth in Raw Milk increases very slowly, because of the friendly acid-forming bacteria (nature's antiseptic) retards the growth of invading organisms (bacteria). Usually keeps for several weeks when under refrigeration and will sour instead of rot. Pasteurization refers to the process of heating every particle of milk to at least 145 F. and holding at such temperature for at least 15 seconds. Pasteurizing does not remove dirt, or bacterially-produced toxins from milk. Bacterial growth will be geometrically rapid after pasteurization and homogenization. Gradually turns rancid in a few days, and then decomposes. Note. The above chart on nutritive values was cited from â€Å"Report In Favor Of Raw Milk: Expert Report and Recommendations,† by A. Vonderplanitz and W. C. Douglass, 2001, Retrieved from http://docs. google. com Raw milk offers many health benefits which include physical, digestive, and even cognitive health. Perkin (2007) reference cites one of his earlier studies Perkin (2006) that, â€Å"Found protective effects of unpasteurized consumption on current eczema and seasonal allergic rhinitis symptoms,† (p. 627). This research has been supported by others such as Waser (2007) who questioned why most farming children seem not to suffer from these ailments. There are many examples of research that show raw milk’s health advantages. Nelson (2010) identifies published studies that find evidence for the following health benefits: Childhood consumption of raw milk resulted in significant reductions in the development of asthma, eczema, and hay fever (in Nelson 2010, p. 6). Consumption of â€Å"farm milk† showed a significant inverse relationship to asthma and allergies in a study of nearly 15,000 European children (in Nelson 2010, p. ). Although the follow studies are dated and have been continually dismissed by popular science, this research shows a correlation between early childhood consumption of raw milk and the absence of certain childhood ailments. Children who drank raw milk were less likely to develop cavities and higher resistance to tuberculosis (in Nelson 2010, p. 6). Raw milk prevented scurvy and protected against flu, diphtheria and pneumonia (in Nelson 2010, p. 6). I find it ironic that we currently immunize children (and some adults) for several of the above diseases. It makes me wonder whether the consumption of raw milk (or the lack of) has played a significant role in the necessity for these immunizations. Milk in it’s cleanest, rawest form offers the most health benefits to the consumer. The controversy surrounding the legality of raw milk continues to rage on, although the focus should be to eliminate the production of â€Å"dirty† milk. I recall from my time on my parents’ dairy farm that as long as the bacteria count remains below 100,000 per ml, organisms if present, cannot represent significant health hazard. Nelson (2010) confirms that not only does state regulators require a bacterial count of 100,000 per ml for milk slated to be pasteurized, they require the bacteria count of Grade A Raw milk to remain under 30,000 per ml (p. 5). The solution to the raw milk debate is in the creation of a universal standard for all milk, not in the banning of unpasteurized milk. The pasteurization process continues to be of great value for mass produced milk, where animals are kept in confined spaces and reated with antibiotics and hormones, but there is no reason to deny the consumer the enjoyment of high quality unpasteurized milk. The purpose of this essay is to provide you, the reader, an explanation of the benefits of raw milk. Even though these benefits exist, many people have never tried raw milk because it continues to be illegal in many states. Drape (2007) reports that while human consumption of raw milk is illegal in fifteen states, there are 26 states that raw milk can be bought in with cer tain restrictions. In my opinion, this is possibly information that many of you have been denied because many health officials (pressured by politics and large corporations) fear that unpasteurized milk is unsafe. The evidence I have presented, illustrates that untreated milk tastes better, has a higher nutritional value, and offers health benefits above and beyond pasteurized milk. At the very least it has a better flavor, with none of the damage caused by the pasteurization process. I challenge everyone to find a local dairy farmer who produces clean, raw milk and enjoy a glass.
